Manchester Evening News not impressed with Bichipoos
The Pittsburgh Bichipoos: A Franchise in Name Only (and Not Much of a Name)
Let's start with the name. Bichipoos. Nobody has explained what a Bichipoo is. It sounds like a sneeze in a Muppet movie, or a designer dog that costs $4,000 and still chews the couch. Most teams are named after something scary, like Tigers, Pirates or Giants. Pittsburgh went with a word that sounds like something a toddler shouts in a ball pit. The Smiths even have a song for it: "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now."
Pittsburgh Bichipoos open the season 12-0
The Poos are off to a great start after playing 12 home games and winning them all. Nolan Ryan is off to a 4-0 start and 2nd overall draft pick Willie McCovey already has 5 HRs. The offense-first approach has paid off so far for PBP, who are hoping to make their 3rd straight playoff appearance.
Rummies and Sluggers have epic battle
Why start a season with a boring game? Not the Rummies and the Sluggers. Marichal took the mound for the visiting Sluggers against Gibson for the home Rummies, and Gibson carried a no-hitter into the 11th, going 10 2/3 innings with just one walk. Nobody scored until the 15th, when the Sluggers exploded for two runs. In the bottom of the 15th the Rummies got one back and had a runner on third with two out and the pitcher due up. With nothing on the bench but more pitchers, Claude Osteen pinch-hit and drove in the tying run. Still tied in the 19th, the Sluggers pushed across one more and the Rummies could not answer. Final: Sluggers 3, Rummies 2, in 19 innings.
